This essay comprises two chapters from the first part of Bollnow’s book on moods, namely the second chapter on the concept of Stimmung and the third chapter on Stimmungen as the sustaining foundation of the soul. It argues that moods constitute the simplest and most original form in which human life comes to know itself. Moods are understood as a specific harmony between, first, the inner and outer world; second, the states of the body and the soul; and, third, the (...) individual faculties of the soul. Moods differ from emotions in the narrow sense, which are always intentionally directed towards a specific object, whereas moods do not have any specific object; they are states of being, structuring and coloring human existence as a whole. Hence, no system of moods is provided, but their extensive diversity is indicated. Furthermore, transient, unsteady, or “moody” moods are distinguished from persistent or basic moods. (shrink)

He describes the central stream of German humanism as practical, in that it combines the principled imperative to overcome all structures and situations in which people are not treated as human beings with seeking to widen the horizons of humane existence in the arts and sciences and in capabilities of leading a fulfilling life. This humanism (...) compels resort to other criteria than nature, such as those logical, emotive, cultural, in order to gauge the acceptability of value claims. The practical efforts to humanize society and widen human horizons requires engagement in public policy debates and social organizing and programming on consensus issues. Accordingly, the HVD works on such diverse issues as strengthening the rights to bodily integrity and sexual autonomy, preventing economic collapse, accommodating immigrants, protecting personal privacy, limiting the use of military force, building intra- and international peace, and exposing anti-humanist prejudice. Wenn sie auch selten in reiner Form verwirklicht sind; so ist es doch wichtig, sie zunächst einmal in reiner Form, als Idealtypen im Sinne Max Webers, herauszuarbeiten, gewissermaßen als Erziehungsmodelle durchzukonstruieren, um erst einmal eine Übersicht in der verwirrenden Fülle der pädagogischen Theorien zu gewinnen, und dann zu fragen, wie weit sie angemessen sind, wie weit sie einander ausschließen oder miteinander verträglich sind, wie weit sie (...) sich sogar ergänzen können oder müssen, um so ein angemessenes Bild von dem zu gewinnen, was tatsächlich in der Erziehung geschieht oder geschehen muss. This book examines what we can gain from a critical reading of Marx's final manuscript and his conclusion of the "systematic presentation" of his critique, which was the basis for Engels's construction of the third volume of his infamous 'Capital'. The text introduces the reader to a key problem ́of Marx's largely implicit epistemology, by exploring the systematic character of his exposition and the difference of this kind of 'systematicity' from Hegelian philosophical system construction. The volume contributes to establishing a (...) new understanding of the critique of political economy, as it has been articulated in various debates since the 1960s - especially in France, Germany, and Italy - and as it had already been initiated by Marx and some of his followers, with Rosa Luxemburg in a key role. Otto Friedrich Bollnow (1903-1991), Philosoph und Pädagoge, ist aus der Göttinger Dilthey-Schule hervorgegangen. Geprägt durch Jugendbewegung und Reformpädagogik des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts sowie durch ein Studium bei Martin Heidegger, blieb sein Denken zeitlebens bestimmt von der Spannung zwischen Lebensphilosophie und Existenzphilosophie sowie den Versuchen, hermeneutische und anthropologisch-phänomenologische Ansätze für Philosophie und Pädagogik fruchtbar zu machen. Die dritte Gruppe der Schriften innerhalb der Studienausgabe enthält Bollnows systematische Arbeiten zur Pädagogik. Existenzphilosophie und Pädagogik (1959), eines der bekanntesten Bücher Bollnows, untersucht (...) "unstetige Formen der Erziehung", wie Krise, Erweckung, Ermahnung, Appell und Beratung. Zentrum des Buches ist die ausführliche Behandlung des Begriffs der Begegnung, die auch das Verhältnis von Begegnung und Bildung einbezieht.
